Born in Haarlem, Netherlands, in 1926, Pieter Groot was the son of Pieter and Anna Maria (Korzelius) Groot. Following the end of World War II, Groot served in the military in the Netherlands and Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia, before joining the Royal Dutch Air Force in 1951. While training with the Air Force in the United States, Groot married Diana in 1953, and the couple had four sons: Roy, Richard, Paul, and John.
